Umbagog: Kit Farson

Finally got around to making my character sheet. Kit's summer look is a total shout-out to Ellis from Left for Dead.

SKILLS/TALENTS

Kit has extensive knowledge about dog breeding and Schutzhund training, having spent years helping his father train and handle dogs. He does see the use of dogs as viable decoys against zombies. Since both of his dogs are intact, he would be interested in breeding.

Kit is a good shot when not under duress. He can and has successfully hunted and fished by himself, and under the right circumstances can nail a deer from a spectacular distance. However, Kit panics easily, especially where zombies are concerned, and would need good training to become a reliable combat marksman. If he does not have a shotgun and close range, expect him to miss.

Kit knows basic wilderness survival better than the average person, as well as basic first aid, tracking, and navigation. He is at home in the forest, and would be willing to teach others what he knows.

Kit knows some very basic self-defense moves, taught to him by his father. Kit does not like the idea of physical combat, since he was on the receiving end of too many beatings. He's a combat pragmatist, a scrapper, and a survivor: more likely to grab a beer bottle or a baseball bat to one-up a foe rather than stay in one place and duke it out. Running has saved Kit's skin too many times for him to regard it as mere cowardice.

PERSONALITY

Kit spent years under the thumb of an abusive tyrant and was subjected to a rigorous schedule. He deeply resents the life he had before and feels he was robbed of his childhood. This has given him an innate distrust of adults, especially authority figures. At the same time, Kit aches and longs for acceptance and praise, to be told he's done a man's work and should be proud of himself. He longs to be asked for help as a reliable adult. He demands respect, even though he himself is not always capable of giving it.

While Kit knows the Bible backwards and front and can quote any passage by name and number, he loathes it as the justification his father used for his own hypocrisy. Highly religious people get Kit's hackles up.

Kit feels vulnerable around people, and puts on a brash, aggressive façade to keep people at bay. He is purposely difficult and often rude, to test the true mettle of a stranger. He takes a long time to relax and open up, and finds admitting to an emotional weakness like sadness or fear one of the hardest things in the world. Most of Kit's emotions, especially fear, manifest as anger.

Kit has a good instinct for honesty, but often stifles his desire to trust out of bad experiences. He doesn't like being touched, and will retaliate with vitriol if he is actually ever struck. Bodkin has been trained to automatically attack a threat to his handler that connects.

Kit has a chivalrous streak, and feels protective of girls and women. He will, however, usually exhibit extra rudeness around a female peer to hide his awkwardness. The one exception to Kit's rudeness rule is adult women; at least initially, he will usually not make eye contact and use the word "ma'am".

Kit has the potential for deep and fierce loyalty; he's simply never been given the opportunity to prove it. In defense of those he considers friends, Kit could prove to be very courageous. He wants to belong, wants to help, and wants to be seen as a good, worthwhile person, a steadfast soldier in the fight against the zombie apocalypse. One of the best ways to get on Kit's good side is to ask his opinion.
