So, this is a very late, late birthday present for my Dad. It's a blue meanie, from the Yellow Submarine movie. If you haven't seen it, you need to. It's a head trip, but it's also a delicious slice of feel-good 60's rebellion. You just can't not feel warm-hearted towards your fellow man after you've seen John Lennon beat the crap out of an evil flying glove with "All You Need is Love." Also: I LOVE THE BEATLES.

When I was little, I actually had Yellow Submarine, because my Dad had recorded it of of MTV. It was the version without "Hey Bulldog", so when the VHS got rereleased in '99, it was a real treat for me. I watched that movie ALL the time, because I loved the songs. Although the meanies scared me, and the lead meanie's line here made me turn the movie off once. Creepy, despite the fact that the movie is one big pun after another.

My sister also had two cassettes, Magical Mystery Tour and Strawberry Fields, which I listened to over and over. I remember her yelling at me for it. My Dad and I both loved "I am the Walrus", for obvious reasons (goo goo ga joob!) but I liked the melancholy "Fool on the Hill", too. Ringo was my favorite Beatle, because he appeared on an early episode of The Simpsons and was really cool. Also, he wrote and sang "Octopus's Garden", which is second only to "Ob la di, Ob la da" in my book. "Piggies" was good, too; you gotta love political satire and social commentary served with fine music and humor.

It delights me to no end that the Beatles remain the J.K. Rowling of music: one of the best bands in the history of music. (And as a side note, way to go, England!) People like Britney Spears and Eminem, who make enough money to cure world hunger and can't live their lives in a straight line, STILL don't make as much as 4 guys who were part of a humanitarian revolution. And don't carry half their clout. I mean, I grew up in the '80s, but I still grew up with the Beatles. They have become myth and legend, and myths last forever. Eminem and Britney Spears will be ten-year flashes in the pan, one of those things our kids are going to laugh at us for telling them about. But the Beatles: we can give our kids Beatles CDs, and they'll get it.

So happy birthday to my Dad, at long last. It's a small return for the love of music, especially the Beatles and David Byrne, he instilled in me.

Paul: Catchy tune, that.
Ringo: I can't seem to get it out of my head.
George: Then shake it.
Ringo: That's what we've been doing all night.
Paul: Yeah, it was a great party.
George: And we brought back some lovely souvenirs. Here's the motor. *holds out a kite handle as the "motor"*
Paul: And I've got a little LOVE. *the word LOVE appears in his hand*
Ringo: And I've got a hole in my pocket. *holds a green "hole"*
Paul: A hole?
Ringo: *slams "hole" onto a table* Well, half a hole, anyway. I gave the rest to Jeremy.
George: What can he do with half a hole?
Paul: I'll fix it to keep his mind from wandering! *laughs*
Ringo: Hey, look at John, will ya.
Paul: What's the matter, John love? Blue meanies?
John: Newer and bluer meanies have been sighted within the vicinity of this theatre. There's only one way to go out.
George: How's that?
John: SINGING!

It's astonishing how young they look it that clip. My favorite character was Jeremy.
I've seen a lot of shoutouts to Yellow Submarine lately. Kei$ha's video, Mad Mod in Teen Titans ... I've heard rumors of a live action remake.

Ahahah! When I saw the thumbnail for this, I was like ".. Am I insane, or is this from Yellow Submarine?! X_x" I watched that movie a million times with my grandparents... and I couldn't agree more with your words about the Beatles. I love them to death ^_^ They are, by far, the most awesome group I know of. I do have to say my favorite song from the movie is Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band (including Help From My Friends) <3
Anyways, about the piece...

I love the way you did this! The shading looks spectacular, and the shadow is so good xDD The palette is great, and the background effect stuns me. This is a total must-add to my favorites :+favlove:

i confess i never saw that, but i heard the songs and they are incredibly catchy

probably because of the surface texture, but the shading seems a bit lost in him...for me at least it distracts from the drama of the moment, maybe because i'm not familiar with the character
