And he shall come with lightning in his jaws And thunder in his wake To throw down all who scorn the Pact You shall know him by the sacred mark of Sol.
Sunstrike, a Utahraptor and the main character from my dinosaur novel, Mark of the Conifer. He really does have a kind of scaly/pebbled conifer mark on his chest, but the shadows in this make it hard to see. I'll probably do another piece eventually that shows off his mark. This is the same baby raptor that makes a cameo in the final page of my comic The Pact, which is kind of a prequel story. [link] So, I'm kind of sort of getting light and color and value? I've been studying it for the last couple of months, reading everything I can about it and doing a lot of sketchwork studies. I wanted to do some painterly dinosaurs for my portfolio, something that might be worthy to end up in a dinosaur encyclopedia, as opposed to comic-y happy dinosaurs for kids. While I have no idea if I succeeded or not, this is definitely a milestone piece. It's one that satisfied as well as taught. I might do a tutorial on how I did this, just for the sake of getting all the steps down. I forgot half the stuff my practice paintings taught me as far as layer settings, and was like "Dang it!" This was only about 4 hours of painting, but it took me 6 because I couldn't figure out how to replace my blocked in shadows.
Your art is wonderful. I admire how you experiment with style and always seem to be teaching yourself art while you take on what I see to be the long and difficult task of publishing quality novels. I especially enjoy Sunstrike, and I can't wait to see what else you show us of your stories.
Partly because I have a hideous migraine, but mainly because this is bloody GORGEOUS.
The pose, the colouring, I love it all
