Sarkanj is Cheharraphix's little brother, and one of the major villains in Mark of the Conifer. In many ways he's an antithesis to a lot of elements that show up in animal fiction: the heroes almost always have an ally that can understand things beyond animal intelligence (like Blackberry in Watership Down) and heroes often use the "magic" of fire to fight their enemies (Ratha's Creature and both Fire-Bringer and the Firebringer trilogy.) I decided to flip both: what if you had an evil Smart Guy who knows how to use fire?

I had way too much fun with his lighting. I didn't get around to Sarkanj in the first round of paintings because I was so frustrated with my ability to paint black. But I'm getting slightly better; mostly what saved this was its dramatic light source.

It is written differently ( sárkány ), but sounds the same

"what if you had an evil Smart Guy who knows how to use fire?" That would add a certai amount of terror to the story. This guy would cause his prey to live in permanent fear; they´d never know when or where he´d strike.
