Roots-of-All-Forests, the Dragon King of woodland and fern, found a curious bit of wood, that was hollow and whistled when the wind blew. He rolled a body out of mud and leaves, and put the bit of woodsong as a head. And in doing so, he crafted the hadrei, the grazers who trumpet and sing.
Roots-Of-All-Forests is the Dragon King of the hadrei, duck-billed dinosaurs like Iguanodon and Tenontosaurus. Parasaurolophus is probably my favorite Lambeosaurinae, but I included some other crests for visual interest. I use the demigods to draw a lot of the dinosaurs I can't otherwise draw, so this was fun.
The hadrei are represented on the soundtrack by the incredible Chouwa Oto "With Reflection" by Kokia [link] I was playing around with this kind of tribal idea that the hadrei were singers, and couldn't seem to find a way to make that interesting. I listened to this song while working on the drawing and suddenly got hit with the idea that this song is exactly the kind of multi-voiced chanting that would occur during a hadrei wake: their way of honoring the dead. The hadrei in the story don't have a coolness factor like other dinosaurs do, and I was concerned their nobility and sense of sacrifice would be understated. This song gave me the impetus to hopefully make sure that wouldn't happen.
Green is the hardest color to paint for good reason. I'm not saying I'm happy with this, but I definitely took it as far as it'd go.
Unfortunately, the story takes place in Early Cretaceous, and there is no Ceratopsian featured in the mythology. (Only one actually exists as a character, and while he's considered rare by the other dinosaurs, in truth he's a fudged extant species because I couldn't resist.) A Ceratopsian Dragon King would be freaking awesome, though.
The way you colored this Dragon Kind makes him look like a life-bearer, a pulsing, breathing being. The green on his back seems soft and cool while the green on his head and horns is warmed by the sun, glowing and full of life. And the pine stands out as it should be. I really love this illustration.
Glad you liked that song, Droe. I think it goes well with the duckies. ^_^ Ferns look more defined, now. I really like the texture on the greenery along this guy's side (in the shadow). The yellow light bouncing off that back thigh is delicious.

I really love this illustration.
I really love this design, just the way it looks like the forest given dinosaur shape is wonderful.
