Artist's Comments

Just a quick tutorial I threw together while chatting with Starhorse and Wadhifitook. They cheered me up.
I draw these little guys incessently on my notebook margins. Horses leap over biology notes and gallop past art history dates. I really should start drawing something harder, like humans.
Form concept is my current eureka. I'm trying to use it more because form concept = stronger foundation drawings.
I also draw a lot of my horses with the Peruvian Paso or Andalusian body and mane, because I own a Peruvian. But I tried to keep my drawings more stock or grade body type, cause those are the kind you see most of the time.

I am in such a rut it's not funny. Plus I'm working on two comissions, so those will occupy my time for a bit. I hope this helps folks. Draw 100 of these things and post 'em. You'll get better. And I'll give you something.

Oh yay! I usually use the circle method and can vouch for its helpfulness. Anyway, you're so good. I bow to your superb talents.

Oh goodness, you have no idea how useful this will be! I was just going to search for a horse tutorial, and here, one pops up! I need to get back into drawing them... haven't drawn them for years, and then, they looked horrible. XD

Thanks so much!

Thank you this will be sooo useful... it's simple and breaks the horse anatomy down to help me visualise how the animal moves (as I'm not around horses at all this is very very useful) Please could you do some more of these showing how the back legs move in relation to the range of movement of the front legs?

Could you also draw us the superficial muscles too to help with things like shadows and light placement?

I have but one thing to say:

I love you. o-o;
:icondroemar:
Jeez! Um, I can probably do some horse movement, but I don't know a lot in the way of anatomy. Most of my shading is based on form concept anyway; i.e. I shade a sphere rather than a particular muscle.
Also, try [link] for good horse reference. Not being around horses doesn't mean you have to miss out. Besides, my horse doesn't move like a normal horse (you can see my sad attempt at a Peruvian's llano gait in the tutorial), so I cann't reference him anyway when it comes to doing normal gaits like a trot or a gallop.
