Armor Study by Droemar Armor Study by Droemar
A study in gouache, marker, and ink pen just to see if I could pull it off. I was working strictly with values and trying to concentrate on rendering. I am not good at rendering and detail. Someone told me if you're going to do a study you need to go whole hog, so this was pretty challenging and took a few weeks of off and on painting. I learned a lot with this.

The original on the right can be found here: [link]

I have to disagree - your work in detail is better than that original image.

The original has so many parts lumped together in such a way that the figure has no distinction of silhouette, so all those metal engravings, highly defined straps, bolts, plates beneath other plates, etc., only make the figure hard to visually identify.

There are other issues with the design, like the horrifying spindly little legs and the many, many reasons that the costume wouldn't work as armor, but that would be getting into a critique of the original.

The short of it is: your adaptation of the piece is much easier on the eyes. Good job.

It's done really well and I think it's great you got a lot out of it. I've recently done master studies of sargeant and leo and I get something new out of it EVERY time.

And in a funny lecture my professor recently mentioned that good artists copy but great artists steal. He means the stealing in jest of course :)

My only concern is for the sake of misunderstanding. Let's face it, there are some people here who love to cry wolf so be sure to clarify that the original is from :icontahra: or Tahra on the description or title.

Some people won't read that unless it's in bright neon lettering.

the only thing i would even consider critiqueing about the guy to the right, would be to make his backplate less shiney, that bag thing behind it i think shows how it should be darker there

Hey bro, I don't want to be rude, and correct me if im wrong, but it looks like you traced it.
You learn better if you just draw and have the reference on the side.
