A Handy Dandy Rebuttal by Droemar A Handy Dandy Rebuttal by Droemar
For anyone who has been told their art was rude, offensive, controversial, upsetting, or disrespectful.

Part of the reason I think I know I'm getting better at what I do is because more people lately have been stepping in to tell me how I'm doing it wrong. And expecting me to apologize for it, for some reason. And I don't think much of the stuff I do is particularly edgy, really. I write sarcastic blogs and draw and write fantasy.

For especially those young artists out there: people who won't like your work have a problem that BELONGS to them, not to you. And people who want YOU to control how THEY respond are dysfunctional power-grabbers. I have a problem with fanart. Yeah, I do. And you know what? It's MY problem and I own it fully. I expect people who have problems with my work, and your work, too, to own it. And if they can't, you don't have to accommodate them. That's not your job.

Your job is to be an artist.

❤❤❤ I *know* I step on people's toes. Some of what I do isn't meant to pander to people's sensitivities. That said, I'm always revising and tweaking.... Can't figure out why people would have issues with your work, though. :/

If I recall, I think I mentioned that my raptor culture from my novel Mark of the Conifer were based in bushido, and this person who had previously been a real fan of my work started lecturing me about how terrible bushido was and how many people died under its historical rule and I should be ashamed of promoting it. I told him that was the absolute stupidest piece of bullshit I'd ever heard in my life, because George Lucas isn't endorsing Nazism by calling them Stormtroopers. He was totally outraged and kept ranting at me, so I posted this and blocked him for being stupid. Definitely one of the most idiotic arguments I've ever had in my life.

I love you, and you just gained a watcher. That sounds particularly stalkerish in the same sentence, but nonetheless, I share your views and I appreciate your way of expressing them.

Oh my god.So true -.-. I've had this one person who's told me in two of my drawing's on my other account that it offended her.
...It wasn't directed at them and honestly,it didn't even have anything in it. My OC's are not me,if they are rude to something in a story,it's not against you.if you don't like it,then don't look or comment on it.
Annyyyways xD mini rant over.
I'm so glad that you made this, rofl. Thankyou so much. If this was a stamp,i'd so use it.

Somebody told me my sarcastic blogs were rude, and I should be aware of the poor, fragile egos of young, delicate, budding artists.
You're welcome to bite them, but I scorched them thoroughly.

Are the mis-spellings deliberate? That should be "offended and "existence".
I ask because I totally agree with your idea, but don't get whether you are indicating that the person complaining is an ignorant twazzock.

I think the misspellings are deliberate since Handy Dandy can spell "accommodate". That second "m" gets me every time.:D (Big Grin)

I mean the only thing that I've truly ever complained about was the nude art because I expressed a lot of them were not thought out, and most to me were just people having an excuse to show butt and boobs to some very sick people on here. It bothered me only because it kinda took away from the other artists who put a little more time and effort on theirs. A message to convey you know? I respect every art form, but the nude art is very touchy. Also the fetish stuff, that to me, I just don't like it >.> But I simply stay away from it now. If you don't like it, don't click it. That's what I've learned. This is long o_o

Had a brush with one of these unpleasant individuals sometime ago. Wouldn't have been so irritating if the individual wasn't a non-artist who got a DA account for the sole purpose of calling out artists who offended her.

Thank you for this.

who knows? maybe they have too much time on their hands. or maybe they think their feelings of offence are more important than the feelings the artist is trying to express. or maybe they're just spoiled rotten entitled brats.

I personally take reactions as compliments. Whether it's positive or negative, the more extreme the better. I like to know that I struck a chord somewhere.

Also feels nice to have an art work tear my soul inside out and disturb every neuron out of me. Could just be me.

This is an awesome perspective to have, I love it! It reminds me of a quote from David Mamet that I think can be applied here as well,

"Acting is not a genteel profession. Actors used to be buried at a crossroads with a stake through the heart. Those people's performances so troubled onlookers that they feared their ghosts. An awesome compliment. Those players moved the audience not such that they were admitted to a graduate school, or received a complimentary review, but such that the audience feared for their soul. Now that seems to me something to aim for."
-True and False, Heresy and Common Sense for the Actor

...Not that I'd particularly like to be buried at a crossroads with a stake through the heart, but I would love to have the courage to be so daring in my artwork.

Used to be that we didn't have to put up with whiny narcissistic people, a quick beat down would straighten them out. Now you have to bear it because they can bankrupt you with lawyers if you even give them a dirty look.

Caveat of free speech: I'm fully entitled to tell any artist the same thing that creature in the picture says.
Another caveat of free speech: The artist is fully entitled to reply "No" And I can't do anything about it. Well, anything other than rant some more.

Of course everyone is entitled to speak freely, but if it slips into plain rudeness about he work or even into personal attack on the artist, that is just wrong and it only says about the person that it seeks conflict or to bully someone to compensate for own failures.
Not to mention offending someone publicly is a crime as well. Except on the internet it is more anonymous.

Heh, in the case of the posted quote that's actually a perfectly legal thing to say, and - had the art been offensive to the speaker, say, being a racist propaganda - not even quite rude (although rather silly.)
Funny thing, people who express outrage, believe that their "targets" are obligated to respond. Why, you were offended by my art? That's awesome! Good for you!
